Goal 1: Foster High Academic Achievement and Character Excellence
Objective 1.1: Audit, align, revise, and implement curriculum to the Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) through the creation and documentation of Learning Plan Overviews (LPOs) for each Expedition.
- Strategy 1.1a: Teachers will create, document, instruct, audit, and revise LPOs annually through curriculum camps and ground school.
- Strategy 1.1b: CAS not addressed in each expedition will be taught through various workshops to ensure all students have access to all CAS.
- Strategy 1.1c: Expedition LPO and a K-12 scope and sequence will be created to monitor CAS taught at each grade level.
- Strategy 1.1d: Students will create annual portfolios that document each individual student's “story of a learner,” which will include artifacts from each content area, crew, service learning, and adventure experiences.
Objective 1.2: Provide students with opportunities for growth in targeted areas of need in literacy and mathematics.
- Strategy 1.2a: Assess students through the use of multiple forms of standardized (local and statewide) and portfolio assessments to determine student proficiency.
- Strategy 1.2b: Provide intervention opportunities to students who are determined to be below proficient in literacy and mathematics.
- Strategy 1.2c: Monitor student progress every 6 weeks during the course of an intervention cycle as students work toward grade level instruction.
Objective 1.3: Students are members of a “Crew” in which they will foster social relationships, community, and measures of accountability to foster academic and character excellence.
- Strategy 1.3a: Each school level will establish, implement, and revise annually a Continuum of Community Systems and Structures.
- Strategy 1.3b: Students will participate in service learning as connected to their respective learning expedition content to ensure that learning is a transferable experience to the local community.
- Strategy 1.3c: RMSEL staff will serve as architects of the human experience of which Crew will be a catalyst to maintain inclusive environments and integrate multiple perspectives from community that enrich the lives of all students.
- Strategy 1.3d: Fostering crews results in a decrease in bullying and harassment in both the physical school setting and outdoor learning experiences.
Objective 1.4: Evolve the RMSEL counseling program.
- Strategy 1.4a: Create a scope and sequence for Mini-Challenge (9th), Internship (10th & 11th), and the Senior Learning Experience (12th) to explicitly teach students skills needed to achieve their postsecondary goals.
- Strategy 1.4b: Provide opportunities for students to engage in meaningful career exploration and planning throughout middle and high school.
- Strategy 1.4c: Plan, advertise, and implement events throughout College Application Month to increase our students access to CAFSA, FAFSA, free applications, and scholarships.

Goal 2: Prioritize equity, inclusion, and access for all students
Objective 2.1: Analyze, revise, and strengthen district policies and systems with a focus on promoting social justice and equity.
- Strategy 2.1a: Fully integrate restorative justice practices into our discipline policies.
- Strategy 2.1b: Revise the district discipline matrix to increase restorative interventions and skill building and decrease punitive and exclusionary practices.
- Strategy 2.1 c: Create, monitor, and continuously improve RMSEL’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports.
- Strategy 2.1d: Prioritize budget allocations towards supporting the differentiated needs of our students with documented disabilities.
- Strategy 2.1e: Update the Teacher Evaluation Framework to include a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion within the classroom, fieldwork, and adventure. Provide teachers with the necessary tools to show proficiency in these areas.
Objective 2.2: Maintain an enrollment lottery that is hosted and operated by a third party that ensures alignment with nondiscrimination/ equal opportunity policies and practices. No student will be denied access based on financial limitations.
- Strategy 2.2a: Any student who requests financial assistance may apply as such and will be reviewed for an award tied to the (federal free reduced lunch standard).
- Strategy 2.2b: Continue to partner with Enterprise Management to receive nutrition services. Enterprise Management is a contract provider as purchased in partnership with Denver Public Schools.
- Strategy 2.2c: Review family displacement and hardships effecting financial payments during the school year on a case-to-case basis for additional support.
- Strategy 2.2d: DAC will establish and maintain a “Belay Fund” for additional assistance.
- Strategy 2.2e: Seek recruitment opportunities within our partner school districts including but not limited to community outreach with other EL schools or schools implementing a similar instructional framework. Seek the opportunity to share the learning model at RMSEL with schools that serve a diverse population of students and outline the opportunities for accessibility to RMSEL. Recruitment outreach will be targeted at school level transitions where the attending school no longer serves a grade level. RMSEL will not see recruitment in grades that are offered the other school.
Objective 2.3: Foster a culture and climate that values multiple student perspectives and experiences to ensure that an inclusive classroom is maintained.
- Strategy 2.3a: Learning expeditions will integrate multicultural studies, providing a diverse range of perspectives as tied to the experiences of the student body. A broader range of ideas and perspectives leads to a richer learning environment and educational outcomes.
- Strategy 2.3b: Adventure experiences will integrate off-site immersive experiences in local communities for students as tied to the learning expedition when possible.
- Strategy 2.3c: Service learning opportunities will be created and fostered to ensure students are actively engaged in understanding the perspectives of the community in which they live and serve.
- Strategy 2.3d: Through professional development, the staff will engage in a review of learning expeditions, adventure experiences, and service learning opportunities annually to ensure that a multicultural perspective is present for diversification of instructional planning.
Objective 2.4: Monitor equity gaps annually, specifically those as tied to student achievement, discipline, and access.
- Strategy 2.4a: Monitor the student achievement as outlined in the school performance framework. Goals will be established and documented in the RMSEL work plan to work toward closing any present achievement gaps.
- Strategy 2.4b: Monitor and respond to disproportionate numbers of students from racial and/or ethnic groups present in student conduct and discipline.
- Strategy 2.4c: Review the effectiveness of leveled course offerings and devise a plan for differentiation within all courses.
Objective 2.5: Develop and continuously strive to embody the RMSEL equity statement.
- Strategy 2.5a: Form an equity team whose charge is to engage in deep equity work, starting with self, with the end goal of engaging all stakeholders as they develop the RMSEL equity statement and determine an action plan for increasing the focus on equity at RMSEL.
- Strategy 2.5b: Continuously analyze academic and social/emotional data to and respond to opportunity and equity gaps every semester.
- Strategy 2.5c: Reflect annually on the effectiveness of our action plan focused on realizing the RMSEL equity statement.
Goal 3: Community Engagement and Communication—Centering Belonging
Objective 3.1: Provide ongoing opportunities for stakeholders to provide feedback on their RMSEL experience.
- Strategy 3.1a: Administer, analyze, and respond to quarterly surveys to gauge the social and emotional well-being of our students as well as student satisfaction.
- Strategy 3.1b: Administer, analyze, and respond to quarterly surveys to gauge parent/guardian satisfaction and sense of belonging.
- Strategy 3.1c: Administer, analyze, and respond to quarterly surveys to gauge staff satisfaction and sense of belonging.
Objective 3.2: Form a parent-teacher-student association whose members are representative of all RMSEL cultures.
- Strategy 3.2a: RMSEL PTSA will host a variety of community events throughout the school year to foster community engagement and raise funds for school operations.
- Strategy 3.2b: Create and continuously revise the Parent Crew Handbook to increase and streamline opportunities for parent engagement.
- Strategy 3.2c: Utilize the RMSEL PTSA to create and sustain opportunities to celebrate all cultures represented in American society.
Objective 3.3: Provide frequent and ongoing communication to the community.
- Strategy 3.3a: Create ongoing communication through weekly emails from the Executive Director’s desk, bimonthly Field Notes, and quarterly parent forums through Coffee Talk with Tiffany, and the weekly Fox Den Download to staff.
- Strategy 3.3b: Form a website improvement committee to develop a vision and action plan for updating and sustaining the RMSEL website.
Goal 4: Investing in Staff
Objective 4.1: Develop a professional learning model that is rooted in data and supports the growth of all staff.
- Strategy 4.1a: Strengthen the implementation of formal and informal performance evaluation systems
for educators and administrators that outline exemplary practices for expeditionary learning instruction and facilitation, and supervision of teaching.
- Strategy 4.1b: Use ongoing observation data to co-create schoolwide, differentiated professional development with the Crew Leadership Team. Solicit feedback from all teaching staff through team meetings.
- Strategy 4.1c: Implement a new teacher mentorship program that provides a safe space for new teachers to learn how to plan and implement expeditions, field work, crew, and fitness while balancing social and emotional wellness.
- Strategy 4.1d: Develop a classified staff evaluation system to encourage the growth of RMSEL classified staff positions.
Objective 4.2: Attract and retain high-quality staff.
- Strategy 4.2a: Create distributed leadership opportunities to increase staff voice and impact on school-based decision-making.
- Strategy 4.2b: Provide ongoing opportunities for staff to provide feedback on their experience working at RMSEL. Leaders will communicate clear action steps that arise from staff feedback.
- Strategy 4.2c: Create a long term plan for incrementally increasing staff salaries.
- Strategy 4.2d: Celebrate staff achievements.
